a sci-fi prog rock band shaking up the anchorage music scene.
When Harper’s Farce began songwriting in 2015, they realized their vision for the story they wanted to tell was far too big for a single album of songs. Songwriting became accompanied by short stories, a narrative fiction podcast, concept art, and collaborations with other Alaskan artists. Their upcoming debut album, Volume I: Calescai, is an expansive, collaborative storytelling project that spans multiple mediums. Their music tells the story of a strange city where twin suns glimmer through an oceanic expanse above, and the struggles its citizens experience in the face of unprecedented crisis.
They are also the creators of The Eighth Tower, a sci-fi fiction podcast that accompanies their forthcoming album. The podcast reveals the tales of several mysteriously connected individuals as they struggle to find their way in a world of political and religious control… and rebellion.
Though Calescai is very out-of-this-world, their inspiration for the stories they tell is much more down-to-earth. The queer experience — and particularly its complicated relationship with religion and societal norms — has strongly influenced their storytelling, and led to side projects like their short film, Liminal. As they’ve grown in their art, they’ve become a voice for LGBTQ+ expression in the Alaskan music and arts scenes, and are committed to making Alaska a more expressive, inclusive community.
